Chico rancher honored for activism

Wally Roney, owner of Roney Land and Cattle Co. in Chico, was honored Saturday night as Man of the Year by the Tehama County Cattlemen's Association during the annual winter dinner in Red Bluff.

Here is the bio read by Dick O'Sullivan of the TCCA and provided to the Capital Press (please excuse the all caps):
OUR MAN OF THE YEAR IS A 5TH GENERATION CATTLE RANCHER. OVER THE YEARS HE HAS MADE
SIGNIFICAT CONTRIBUTIONS TO THE CATTLE INDUSTRY IN TEHAMA COUNTY. HIS FOCUS HAS BEEN
PRIMARILY ON PROPERTY RIGHTS AND 20 YEARS AGO HE CORRECTLY IDENTIFIED THE ATTACK ON
THESE RIGHTS BY THE GOVERNMENT. IN 1994, WHEN BRUCE BABBIT CAME FORWARD WITH HIS
VERSION OF RANGLAND REFORM, OUR MAN OF THE YEAR SAID, “ONCE THE GOVERNMENT IS
SUCCESSFUL REFORMING THE PUBLIC LANDS, THEY WILL BE AFTER PRIVATE PROPERTY.” HE, ALONG
WITH OTHER RANCHERS, FOUGHT THIS REFORM THROUGH THE CALIFORNIA CATTLEMEN’S
ASSOCIATION, THE PUBLIC LANDS COUNCIL, THE FARM BUREAU AND HE PERSONALLY WENT TO
WASHINGTION DC TO MEET WITH THE UNDER-SECRETARY OF AGRUCULTURE AND PRESENT OUR
CASE.

WHEN THE GREAT CONSERVATION MOVEMENT STARTED UP AND THE GOVERNMENT BEGAN
FOCUSING ON PRIVATE LAND, OUR MAN STOOD FIRM IN HIS OPPOSITION TO THE GOVERNMENT’S
NEGATIVE POLICIES. TOGETHER, WITH HELP FROM OUR FRIEND RICH ROSS, HE OPPOSED THE
UNSOLICITED INTRODUCTION OF A SAFE HARBOR PROGRAM FOR ENDANGERED SPECIES IN TEHAMA,
SHASTA, GLENN & BUTTE COUNTIES AND HE WORKED ON A RESOLUTION, THAT WAS PASSED BY THE
CALIFORNIA CATTELMEN’S ASSOCIATION, TO PREVENT THIS TYPE OF THING FROM HAPPENING
IN THE FUTURE. HE WORKED HARD ON THE OPEN RANGE COMMITTEE FOR OVER TWO YEARS. HE
VOLUNTEERED HIS TIME, ALONG WITH ARLO STROING, TO REPRESENT THE TEHAMA CATTLEMEN’S
ASSOCIATION AND WORK ON THE COUNTY GENERAL PLAN FOR AN ADDITIONAL TWO YEARS. HE IS A
MAN WHO TRULY UNDERSTANDS THAT OUR FREEDOMS BEGIN AND END WITH PROPERTY RIGHTS.

WHEN HE FOCUSES ON AN ISSUE, OUR MAN OF THE YEAR CAN TRULY BE DISCRIBED AS “RELENTLESS”.

IT GIVES ME GREAT PLEASURE TO PRESENT THE 2012 TEHAMA COUNTY CATTLEMEN’S MAN OF THE
YEAR AWARD TO……WALLY RONEY!
